“No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.”
I keep coming back to that phrase, “more than conquerors.”
It lets us know that God has given us more power on earth than the great empires that overthrew cities: the Babylonians, Persians, Romans, and others.
Not military power, of course. Quite the opposite.
The power we wield is love — His love for us, our love for Him, and our willingness to share that love with others.
But we must be faithful to wield that power. To believe that it’s working, even when we can’t see it or feel it.
Because just as those conquerors of old laid siege to cities and overcame them with slow, steady force, we who follow Jesus Christ must extend our boughs of compassion towards our families, communities, workplaces…and overcome them with steady love.
Let this be a week that we show greater love. Persistent, enduring love. Where we love our neighbor as ourselves (Matthew 22:39), and love even those who spitefully use us (Matthew 5:44).
By love was the kingdom of God established, and through love it shall be advanced.
